7th International Craft Awards 2023 – Bharat
In the winter of 2023 I had the privilege of being the first European awarded with the Dr. Ghada Hijawi-Qaddumi Honorarry Award for Excellence, an award that represents an honorary tribute because apart from the profound work that theDra. Gada Hijjawi-Qaddumi did for the craft, art and museums in which she is involved. Death came to her as the president of WCC-AISBL (International).
This award was awarded to the closing of the I World Craft Forum 2024 that was held at the National Crafts Museum & Hastkala Academy in New Delhi.
Symbology of the physical award
The charkha or spinning wheel , was the physical embodiment and symbol of Gandhi’s constructive program . It represents Swadeshi , self-sufficiency and, at the same time, interdependence, because the wheel is the center of a cotton network, cardoms, weavers, distributors and users. Also embodied the dignity of work, equality, the unit, as all volunteers had to spin every day, and finally independence, as British control of India was rooted in control of indigenous industries such as textiles.
